Introduction to Carving:
Marine and Residential
Whether a carved sign or an artistic embellishment to a boat or piece of wood furniture, it’s those extra creative touches that easily set a wood creation and its creator apart from the rest. This three-day course covers carving lettering for a name or number board, along with the skills of carving decorative relief. The skills taught are for both beginners and advanced woodworkers and can be applied to marine and/or residential products.
This hands-on course teaches you how to sharpen and maintain your carving chisels, which ones are appropriate for what jobs, as well as how to use them properly. You will learn layout techniques for making a name or number board, and layout techniques and the process of carving a relief image (ex. a dogwood flower or maple leaf). Also if you have a project or idea already in mind, large or small, of something you would produce in the course, bring it along and we will explore what is needed to make that happen.
Tuition and class size: $500 - Three day course. The minimum number of students for the class to run is 2 to a maximum of 6 students.
Materials and tools: Some personal hand tools needed. A student tool list will be provided with the registration package. The school will provide all other hand/power tools and machinery necessary, as well as a printed or PDF version of the course handouts.
