Testimonials from past students. Alumni photos and images from 2015 courses at The Grove Woodworking School. Teaching boat interiors, cabinetry, into to woodworking, carving, deck hatches, door-making, finishing, lofting, planking and caulking. Gabriola Island, British Columbia.
I love The Grove Woodworking School. I'm a novice, and so far I've taken the Introduction to Woodworking and the Custom Door-Making courses. Tony is great... it's obvious that he has a deep respect and passion for the best in woodworking and the best in past boatbuilding traditions.
He shared his rich store of knowledge, wisdom, and skill with patience and humor. The courses are well planned, organized and still flexible enough to accommodate individual needs and goals. For example, in our Door-Making course, in addition to planning and crafting a complex Dutch boat door, we were also able to make saw horses and torsion boxes for use as work tables.
Class sizes are kept small so there's a lot of one-on-one time, with emphasis on safety, basic woodworking skills, and appreciation of woods and tools. A terrific beginning for me...I'm looking forward to making stuff out of wood without cutting off any of my fingers!

I tremendously enjoyed every part of the Intro to woodworking class. Excellent teaching, relaxed and safe atmosphere and a real treat to have Tony as a teacher! A must-have experience! Thanks Tony! - Ali, July 2015
I took the one-week course Introduction to Woodworking at The Grove Woodworking School and really enjoyed every part of it. Tony Grove is one the most knowledgeable men in any kind of woodworking I have ever met. No matter if you intend to build anything in or outside of water and do need some inspiration, help or advise, he is person to go to.
Gabriola itself is a very relaxed, culturally-rich and holiday-like atmosphere with good island fresh food from lettuce to handpicked oysters to one of Canada's best bakeries called Slowrise Organic Bakery. Plenty of overnight options as B&Bs and camping. Great outdoor activities with diving, hiking, road and mtb cycling.

I sought out Tony Grove because I was ready to take my woodworking skills to a new level, and wanted some expert guidance to set me on that road. I chose a project with plenty of technical challenges, and had Tony come to my shop where we worked through it together.
This was a hugely valuable experience. With Tony’s expertise in all manner of equipment all my major tools were evaluated and fine-tuned, improving their function to a remarkable level; and with his advice in shop design I made several rearrangements that made my space far more functional. Time spent on sharpening tools and techniques was particularly helpful.
Working through a project with Tony was a thorough education in exactly some of the areas I most needed, such as exacting measurement, fine finishing, and creative solutions when things went awry. I was able to give free rein to my vision for the project, and with Tony’s help I achieved it.
I am confident to take on challenging projects on my own now, but also look forward to taking some of Tony’s courses to add to my skills.

I recently attended the Introduction To Woodworking course, what a fantastic experience. I have nothing but respect for Tony and feel very privileged that I had the chance to learn from such an experienced and knowledgeable man. There were different levels of student in the class and Tony made sure everyone learned at the pace they needed. Whether you're a complete novice, someone that has played around for a while and wanting some direction or an old hand woodworker wanting to have a refresh on shop safety this course is for you. I made my daughter a stool/toy storage whilst I was there, looking forward to attending future courses!! Thank you so much Tony

“I drove with my camper trailer from Tennessee to British Columbia in 2001 to attend the four month Marine Cabinetry class at the old Silva Bay Shipyard School. Tony Grove was the instructor and the class was all I could have hoped for. The student body was, to say the least, varied - from a vocational counselor to a professional woodworker. I was somewhere in the middle. Tony brought all along at their own speed. There was an emphasis on basics to be mastered before moving on; but, as soon as the basics were in hand Tony was there with a project to put the new skills to use. So, it was a wonderful summer on Gabriola Island.”
“The woodworking skills I learned in Tony's class have made a profound effect on the past 18 years of my retirement. Not a day in my wood shop goes by without a thought of Tony Grove. The thought may be "concentrate on the way Tony taught' or "this isn't the way Tony taught" or "if I did it the way Tony taught I wouldn't have just wasted a cut".
Had an amazing experience with Tony. My son and I took his three day knife making class. Totally satisfied over the moon happy with the end result. Tony is an excellent host and teacher. Highly recommend attending any of his classes.
